Mobile Commerce Design: Make the Core Journey Work

This May 2021 article argued that a shopping app should be judged by how easily customers complete their tasks. Adding more features can distract a team from the basic journey of finding products and completing a purchase.

Agree on the purpose of the app

Retailers and development teams need a shared understanding of what the app is meant to accomplish. The original piece highlighted a common mismatch: effort goes into attention-grabbing features while onboarding and checkout receive too little care.

Keep the experience consistent

The article also called for consistency across the app, website and physical retail experience. Customer research should examine actual behaviour and points of friction, rather than relying on assumptions about what shoppers want. Its central design lesson was straightforward: visual polish and additional functionality help only when the core service already works reliably for the customer.
