Six Areas of AI Development in Manufacturing

Sparkler Soft archive14 September 20211 min read

The September 2021 manufacturing overview brought together six areas of interest: predictive maintenance, automation, quality inspection, generative design, workplace safety and production costs. The emphasis was on using operational data to improve specific factory processes.

Different tools for different stages

Maintenance models look for signs that equipment may need attention. Visual inspection systems examine products for defects. Design tools explore alternatives within engineering constraints, while planning and automation systems connect decisions to production.

The factory remains the test

These applications cannot be judged solely by a model’s output. Inspection errors, downtime, integration with equipment and the response of operators all affect the result. The article’s broad survey is a useful record of manufacturing priorities in 2021, but claimed benefits need to be evaluated for the actual line and process. Automation also leaves an important role for human supervision and engineering judgement.
