This February 2021 article considered the benefits and risks of using AI in everyday software and work. It discussed assistants, smartphone applications and the automation of repetitive tasks.
Useful capability is task-specific
The original examples concerned systems that can process information or operate repeatedly without human fatigue. That does not imply that their outputs are always correct, or that performance on one task transfers to another. Deployment still requires a clear purpose and a way to detect mistakes.
Safety is not a promise
The original text made broad assurances about AI remaining under control and improving human outcomes. This adaptation retains its questions without repeating those guarantees. The useful distinction is between what a system has demonstrated, how it is used and who can intervene when it fails. Training and oversight are part of adopting automation, alongside the technology itself.
